8 green computing best practices

Making a data center more environmentally friendly starts with studying your facility's use of power and other resources and identifying potential changes that can make a difference in the usage levels. That can include various steps, such as replacing inefficient technology assets with newer ones or partnering with green IT vendors to help you create a more sustainable data center.

The overall amount of energy used in data centers is massive: the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that data centers used up to 1.3% of the electricity consumed worldwide in 2021.

Here are eight green computing practices you can implement to make your data center more energy-efficient and sustainable, with both environmental and business benefits.

  • Data center facilities management: Are you close to total failure?

With all of the advancements that happen inside of your data center, it's easy to forget to update facilities management strategy. Here's the thing: overheated servers and cooling failures are worse than power failures.

You need to keep track of your data center's physical needs, and there is a good chance that you are using outdated metrics.

This e-guide will help you re-evaluate your data center's physical metrics and update your facilities management strategy.

  • From Excessive Data Center Energy to Modular, Generative & Sustainable Designs

The exponential growth of data and cloud services is driving demand for new data centers and upgrades to existing centers. But this growth cannot be sustained without considering the need to develop efficient Data Centers: they have to consume less energy and water and increasingly need to rely on green energies. This presentation will investigate system engineering approaches which break the siloes between the different domains (building / cooling system / racks…). We highlight system level models that leverage simulation to find the best design compromise and reach sustainability targets. Bringing smart automation to this approach is key to efficiently optimize and test several rack layouts and configurations while monitoring KPIs. To further improve on sustainability and energy efficiency, 3D simulation solutions can complement 1D methods, delivering the needed detail and granularity in results to drive impactful changes.
