The development of wired and wireless LANs in a hybrid work model

Many companies have found that as they have begun to manage the return to offices for the first time since the first lockdown were introduced, the office environment and its demands are very different to a year ago. These different demands are seen in the development of wired and wireless local area networks (LANs). Download our exclusive e-Guide and read more about:

  • Network virtualization benefits in the LAN, WAN and data center
  • Do you need to manage QoS when deploying VoIP over LAN?

  • Why Wi-Fi alone won't cut it: Your look inside private cellular networks

Wireless connectivity can make or break a student’s success, an essential sale, the safety of fans at a ballgame, or the delivery of sensitive materials. With so much at stake, businesses and agencies can no longer afford to rely on Wi-Fi alone — and, in some situations, not even public cellular service is sufficient.

Private Cellular Networks (PCNs), including Private LTE and Private 5G, are dedicated networks that provide local-area network (LAN) connectivity in large areas where current wireless infrastructure fails to meet the needs of the business. Tap into this white paper to learn how private cellular networks support businesses across industries.

  • Focus: Campus local area networks (LAN)

Whether a university buzzing with Gen Z students carrying multiple devices, who have never known a life offline or a large enterprise headquarters spanning multiple buildings with a Millennial workforce that expects the latest and greatest standards of connectivity, the demands now being placed on campus local area networks (LANs) are massive.

And just as datacentres did in the past, campus LANs are coming to be defined more and more by virtualisation and software-based controls. Alongside this trend, LAN hardware continues to improve in its capabilities, as network managers try to keep up with the intense demand

In this e-guide we will explore some of the key trends driving the market for campus LANs and ask how to implement one, find out how one user went about building a network from the ground up on a brand-new site, and look in-depth at some of the active suppliers in the market.

First, we look at how to go about designing and implementing a modern campus LAN, taking into account advances in software-defined and automation.

Then, we will take you behind the scenes at the UK’s University of Northampton to discover how the IT team was able to take advantage of a move to a brand new campus to deploy the latest and greatest networking technology in support of a new model of learning for a new generation of students.

Delving deep into the infrastructure itself, tech evangelist Paul Ryan reveals how copper-based LANs are increasingly unfit for purpose in a digital business, and argues in favour of upgrading to fibre-based passive optical LANs.

Finally, enterprise IT and network design specialist Andrew Froelich looks at some of the key suppliers in the campus LAN space, running the rule over technology from HPE, Huawei and Juniper Networks.

  • Choosing the Right Fiber Optic Solutions for Enterprise LAN Networks

Fiber optic cable, hardware and connectivity are now mainstay solutions for enterprise LAN networks, from the campus network, up the riser and now in the horizontal, with more and more fiber to the edge optical LAN networks being deployed. But knowing which fiber optic cable, hardware, and connectivity to choose for each application can be difficult, especially with the very many options on the market today. From outside plant cable, be it direct buried, hung aerially, or installed in ducts, to fire rated cables for indoor or indoor/outdoor applications, installed in riser or plenum spaces, in ducts, cable trays or conduits, the options for fiber types and cable jackets are many. There are also many different methods for terminated fiber optic cables, from pre-terminated options to fusion splicing to field terminated connectors, and the many different tools that are needed for each method. Finally, choosing the right hardware and enclosures can be another chore, whether they be rack or wall mounted, or put into handholes or manholes, and all the different environmental conditions that need to be considered. The session helps designers, contractors, and end users to logically decide on which solutions are best suited for their applications and for each specific project, discuss the pros and cons of each methodology and help educate on some of the considerations that need to be included when choosing the right fiber optic solution for enterprise LAN environments.

  • Why Wireless Connectivity is the Answer to Corporate Network Transformation

For decades, traditional MPLS was the only option to connect corporate branch environments. With those legacy networks comes a lack of choice in wired connectivity, speed and availability based on service provider metrics, and time-consuming, expensive truck rolls whenever something needs fixed. Today, branch networks are undergoing dramatic change that require organisations to rethink their legacy networks. Many IT professionals are currently asking themselves if 4G LTE is a viable option for branch networks, and whether or not they can trust wireless technology to keep their businesses connected and thriving. In this webinar, we will address a few misconceptions about wireless WAN in the enterprise, and discuss why 4G LTE is not only a practical option for your branch networks, but the most flexible, secure and reliable solution. Whether using cellular for primary, secondary, or hybrid WAN connectivity, 4G LTE plays a significant role in the modern branch network. What we’ll cover: - Traditional wired networks vs. USB modems vs. wireless 4G LTE connectivity - Current state of the WAN and trends in the market - Capabilities of 4G LTE & SD-WAN - Success stories from organisations in banking/finance, retail, and construction outlining use cases in pop-up networking, parallel networking, and failover.

  • Enhanced edge computing for business applications with private mobile networks

Businesses traditionally deploy local area networks (LAN), such as WiFi, to provide network connectivity to their infrastructure and users. These networks can be flexibly deployed at low cost but are limited in their performance and security capabilities. Furthermore, businesses often need to support seamless connectivity for a large number of devices and users, despite their location and mobility characteristics on site. Private mobile networks (PMN) provide an alternative. With PMNs, network systems that control data communications are deployed on site. This provides superior performance compared to traditional LAN solutions and public mobile networks whose software runs in a distant geographical location. Business applications that carry user and device data can enjoy reduced latency when interacting with back-end systems running on platforms hosted by an enterprise. Having a dedicated mobile network for your business means that the deployment and planning of the network can be optimised for your specific needs. Your business application requirements can now dictate how the network should operate but not vice versa. Configuring the network according to business requirements means you’re in a better position to meet customer needs. In this webinar, we will talk about private mobile networks and edge computing in more detail, and explain how this technology provides benefits to various industry sectors. We will go through: A technology overview of private mobile networks Sector requirements for PMN solutions Advancements in mobile networking that deliver PMNs with better edge computing capabilities Canonical provides industry leading solutions for edge computing.
