There is no question that the next generation of person-to-person communications will be based on converging "disruptive" network and application technologies for both wired and wireless person-to-person contacts. This will require new communication application servers and user devices to interoperate across new IP and wireless networks, as well as existing infrastructures such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and enterprise PBX systems.
As per this report the industry providers are already delivering the new piece parts for such convergence, although new standards are still evolving to enable maximum interoperability across converged telecommunication infrastructures.
The study reviews the availability of new, "converged" voice technology for the enterprise markets from a "communication application" perspective, which covers both individual, person-to-person and customer-enterprise contacts. Within these two application domains, we then looked at the various modalities of such communication capabilities as sub-applications that need to interoperate at the end-user level for effective communications convergence.
