On March 3, 2021 the US Government issued a directive to mitigate vulnerabilities with on-premises Microsoft Exchange servers due to a hack by a state-sponsored group Microsoft calls Hafnium.

This day opened a lot of doors with respect to protecting the servers leading to Exchange and the data within it. The first thought is to use a VPN, but VPNs only limit access to the data center.

If an infected device connects to the VPN, it’s still game over. But zero-trust application access provides an extra layer to prevent both unwanted access and infection as well as prevent users for copying and downloading data.
