Tap into Cloud Backup without Fear

Cover Image

Cloud storage, virtualization and the growth of unstructured data have contributed to the way storage architectures are built and used. Virtual storage appliances and server-based shared storage are two concepts that have emerged as viable products, both challenging the notion of what shared storage should look like. We describe the alternatives to traditional storage systems and suggest where they may fit in best.

Cloud backup was the first cloud storage service and gained popularity with smaller firms that lacked infrastructure or expertise. Many of these services now boast “enterprise-class” features that may attract larger businesses.

Historically, networked storage systems have been underused because of poor provisioning and a lack of effective capacity monitoring tools. The emphasis is now on storage efficiency to ensure that companies make the best use of installed storage capacity.
