Using PCIe-based flash cards to accelerate server operations has become a regular practice within data centers of all sizes. By keeping hot data on these flash card inside the server, and going to shared storage for everything else has become a standard practice. This server-based caching version 1.0. It is advantageous to place caching inside the server, closest to the application, but there are inherent limitations to this approach. A broader set of capabilities are required to accelerate enterprise, clustered applications, all while keeping it simple to install and manage. Enter caching 2.0.
This paper examines today’s server-based 1.0 caching approaches, and describes how the QLogic FabricCache 10000 Series Adapter capabilities go well beyond caching 1.0 to define enterprise caching 2.0, to enable application acceleration in single-server and multi-server, clustered environments.
