Gartner: Decide now if you will become a money-making CIO
As a profession, the principal role of a CIO has not really changed all that much in the past few decades. During that time, most CIOs around the world have led their staff in planning, designing, implementing and operating information-technology-based business solutions. The actual business processes that have been most affected by IT during the past half-century have not changed all that much since IT initially altered them.
However, with the arrival of the 21st century's second decade, two new trends will emerge: Starting in 2011, IT spending will target presale-related business processes at unprecedented levels. By 2016, the incentive portion of compensation of a new Global 2000 company CIO will start being based on the amount of new revenue brought in by IT.
We believe information- and knowledge-based initiatives evolving today will open a vast array of new business expansion models for enterprises during the coming decade. As CIOs agree to lead their staff toward creating and capitalising on the new business models that will unfold between 2011 and 2020, at least six distinctly different styles of "money-making CIO" will likely evolve.
