Proper planning is vital when deploying iPads

By Tim Zimmerman, research director, Gartner.

Everyone from doctors to executives is looking to do more with his or her Apple iPad than access social networking, being on FaceTime or read e-books.

IT organisations continue to get requests for executives to gain access to email, teleconferencing and other applications on the corporate network via the wireless infrastructure.

The connectivity expectation by executives is the same as their laptops, though the performance of the iPad can make this an unrealistic proposition.

This means that the performance, range, or both, will be significantly diminished for the iPad or any device where these parameters have not been part of the design effort.

While the requests to add these devices to the network will not go away, proper expectations need to be set about user experience.

This article looks at two key issues that need to be addressed before iPads or any other devices are added to the wireless infrastructure.
